A Guide to Decorating Your New Home

Buying a new home is always an exciting time; whether you are putting your first foot on the housing ladder, moving in with your partner, or celebrating your new single status, decorating your home from top to bottom is a great way to inject your personality into your environment.

Statistics show the average age of a first time buyer in the UK has risen from 28 to 35 in the last ten years. Rising prices is the main reason why people are waiting longer before buying their first home, and many of you will want to furnish it with solid wood furniture because it is a lasting investment to make.

Whether you are buying new furniture from scratch, adding to your existing furniture or replacing items that are tired and dated, here’s our guide to decorating your home with solid wood furniture.

1. Decide on the Look

The first step is to decide on the kind of interior you want to create. There are all sorts of looks to go for including: sleek and minimalist, light and airy, cosy and homely, eclectic, Bohemian, Eastern-inspired, rustic, French Romantic, modern, contemporary or traditional. Do you prefer light or dark wood furniture, or do you want to go for Oriental inspired black or white lacquered furniture? Flick through interior design magazines, or think back to some of the hotels you stayed at, or friends’ houses you have visited, to work out what suits you best.

2. Collect Your Ideas

Once you have a rough idea on the type of interior you want to create, browse the web or flick through magazines to collect your ideas. Next, create a mood board, or ideas file, and include pictures of furniture and accessories you like the most, and add notes on where you want these items to go.

3. Colour

As you are collecting your ideas, take time to decide on a colour scheme for each of the rooms. This could be anything that lifts or inspires you. You may want a blue guest room, for instance, a living room in neutral colours, or bedroom with bursts of colour such as pink or green.

4. Eye for Detail

Making a house into a home is all in the fine detail. Consider all aspects of your interior and decide on whether you want to draw the eye to a particular area or furniture piece. It may be that you want a window seat under a bay window in the living room or have a beautiful chest on the landing to admire. Make lists of the main features of your home and how you want to highlight these.

5. Budget

The next step is to find out how much you can afford to spend and draw up a budget. You may only have enough for essentials now, but you can always add to these in the future. Wooden furniture is built to last, so it is a great investment to make. If you are limited on how much you can spend, another top tip is to invest in classics as these won’t go out of fashion.  Puji has a range of timeless solid wood furniture that will look good for years to come.

6. Measure Up

If you have just bought a property, you will already have a record of room sizes. Draw these to scale on graph paper or download a relevant web application on the computer (free apps are available). Use these to work out roughly what furniture you need and where to place it. Then go from room to room and measure up to find out the maximum size of each furniture piece you can buy.

7. Buying New

If you have a limited budget, focus on buying all the essentials first, so you can create a comfortable environment in which to live. Some of the main furniture essentials include: the bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, sofa, coffee table, dining table and chairs. Prioritise your furniture and buy only what you need.

8. Building on What You Have

Next, build on what you have room by room. It may be that you want to decorate the living room first as this is where you greet your guests. If you already have the main essentials, think about adding to this with storage furniture such as side tables and bookshelves. If you have a tricky shaped room, Puji design and create made-to-measure furniture at great prices, so we always have a storage solution for you.

9. Accessorise

Finally, accessories make an interior more homely and are a way to put your own personal stamp on an interior. From mirrors, to rugs, throws, cushions, soft towels and bed linen, accessories will brighten up a home and add colour to your interior.  Puji are a one stop furniture shop with a fantastic range of accessories designed to co-ordinate perfectly with your solid wood furniture.
